All my life I have wanted a fireplace and we have had on for the last 14 years. In a normal winter it's not too bad, I will split wood by hand once a week and we probably run the fireplace 3 or 4 nights a week just to warm the house a bit.
About every 4 years however we have a really cold winter and I end up splitting wood every day or two. That's okay right now but I don't think I'll be wanting to do that for the next 14 years.
Enter the hydraulic wood splitter. This makes easy work of the job. All I have to do it lift the log and pull a lever. If lifting the log gets to be too much then I will add a hydraulic ramp to do the lifting for me. I think of it as future proofing our lives.
Anyway, I designed this myself so it is all eyeball engineering by someone who is not an engineer. That said, if you would like to see the plans they can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this page.
